Special Guests

  • One of the most widely-read indy comix creators, Backderf grew up in a rural, small town in Ohio, an experience that was the inspiration for his graphic novels TRASHED, PUNK ROCK & TRAILER PARKS and the international bestseller, MY FRIEND DAHMER.  An art school dropout, Derf (by which monicker he is most widely known) worked on a garbage truck before deciding to give cartooning a try. He attended Ohio State University on a journalism scholarship, where he drew political cartoons for the school paper for three years and caused such controversy school officials put a 1-year limit on all future cartoonists. After graduation, he landed a similar position on a paper in South Florida but was fired after two years for, as the editor put it, "general tastelessness." He moved to Cleveland and THE CITY comic strip debuted in the now-defunct Cleveland Edition in 1990. A year later, he began selling it to other alternative papers. The strip has appeared in over 140 publications during it's 20-plus years, including The Village Voice, Chicago Reader and The Los Angeles Reader.  Derf's images have also graced t-shirts and cd covers. His manic illustrations have appeared in all manner of publications, ranging from Guitar Player magazine to the Wall St. Journal.  His work has been displayed in museums and galleries worldwide. He has been nominated for two Eisner Awards (the Oscars of comix), as well as Harvey, Ignatz and Rueben Awards. He was the recipient of a pretigious Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award in 2006.

  • Bill Griffith is the internationally recognized creator of Zippy the Pinhead. He is also one of the founding fathers of the underground comics movement which pioneered creator rights and is a direct forerunner of today’s independent comics scene of which PIX is a part. Diane Noomin is one of the founding mothers of the underground comics movement.

  • Diane Noomin was among the original contributors to the first ongoing comics-anthology series devoted to publishing comics by women, Wimmen’s Comix, and went on to co-found another important female-centric comic, Twisted Sisters. Her trademark creation is DiDi Glitz. Both she and Bill Griffith also contributed work to the critically acclaimed and historically significant comics anthologies Arcade, Weirdo and Young Lust, among others. Somewhere along the way Griffith and Noomin met and married, but they never stopped making comics, and continue to do so today.

  • Wachter arrived here from Cincinnati via Chicago, while LA-native Goldstein recently relocated to Pittsburgh after graduating from the Center for Cartoon Studies. Wachter is a long time comics professional noted for his rare combination of dynamic composition and highly detailed rendering, he has worked on a wide variety of comics projects, and has been nominated for both an Eisner and a Harvey award. Counted among his works are Night of 1,000 Wolves, Breath of Bones and Guns of Shadow Valley, published by IDW and Dark Horse.

  • Goldstein is a three time Ignatz Award winner. Her work is noted for it’s clear line, careful composition and fine design. It has been included in Best American Comics 2013. Her first graphic novel, The Oven – which was originally serialized in the Pittsburgh-based anthology, Maple Key Comics – was recently released by AdHouse Books of Richmond, VA. Among her current projects is the ongoing House of Women.

  • Born in Hoboken, New Jersey (that’s not a joke) Kaz studied cartooning in New York City with Art Spiegelman and Harvey Kurtzman. After contributing comics to many publications (including Raw, Weirdo, Details, and Screw) he launched his weekly alternative newspaper comic strip, Underworld in 1992 (for which he won France’s Hergé Award). In 2001, Kaz began writing on Nicklodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants cartoon show. Since then he’s written for Cartoon Network’s Camp Lazlo (for which he won an Emmy) and Disney’s Phineas and Ferb (nominated for an Emmy). Coming full circle, Kaz has rejoined the crew of SpongeBob and is currently on the writing staff knocking out new episodes. Oh, and he still draws Underworld weekly (read them HERE)!  Learn more about the life and cartooning career of Kaz, in John Kelly’s lengthy interview with him, HERE.

  • Working in the tradition, founded by R. Crumb, of keenly observed, highly personal comics that turn inward as often as outward, Van Sciver is a prolific comics maker who is currently the Resident Fellow at the Center for Cartoon Studies. The last twelve months have seen him release two original graphic novels – Saint Cole and Fante Bukowski, both published by Fantagraphics – a stand-alone autobio comic book, My First Date, a collection of humor comics, Cheer Up, a diary comic, I Don’t Hate Your Guts, and the latest issue of his ongoing one-man anthology comic book series, Blammo; plus numerous contributions to other publications.

  • A founding member of Closed Caption Comics, the loose knit group of comics makers that came out of the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) in the early 00s, Stechschulte has gone on to produce a number of well received self-published risograph editions as well as a graphic novel for Fantagraphics – The Amateurs – and now Breakdown Press of the UK has just released the second, massive, risograph serializing his latest work, Generous Bosom.   Stechschulte heads off the beaten path when creating his comics, which often take place in rural or semi-rural settings.  They focus on exactly those sort of people and scenarios that you won’t find depicted elsewhere; isolated people in locales you’ve never heard of getting themselves caught up in goings on that are not what you'd expect nor what they might at first seem...
